MUNICIPAL COURT
For many people a summons to appear in Municipal Court is their first
experience with the Criminal Justice System. Often people do not realize
the serious impact this court appearance may have on their lives. The
most common mistake people make in this venue is the failure to obtain
competent legal advice from a lawyer.
Municipal Court Judges have the authority to rule on a wide variety
of offences including significant crimes that have been remanded form
Superior Court. The list of offences also includes traffic moving violations,
Driving While Intoxicated, drug offences, domestic violence, disorderly
person offences and violations of City Ordinances. The judge has the
statutory authority to fashion penalties including significant monetary
fines, anger management, drug counseling, suspension of driving privileges,
probation and in some cases a jail term not to exceed one year. Often
two people will be charged with the exact same violation but receive
substantially different sentences. Most of the time when this occurs
it is the result of efforts "behind the scenes" with the Prosecutor
and issuing Police Officer. Choosing the right lawyer may assist you
in eliminating or greatly reducing your potential exposure.
